Join MasterVoices for an experiment in new approaches—firmly rooted in Bach’s unparalleled music‚—that looks at the underlying sentiment of those repeated-text passages. Kyrie/Lord, have mercy: what might that mean today? Who might be asking? Have mercy on whom?

Part developmental workshop, part master class and part open rehearsal, this is a chance to get involved in an intimate, adventurous creative process. Much in the spirit of their multi-chapter Myths and Hymns, MasterVoices is looking to an array of writers and visual artists who will make the text bloom in ways that scan perfectly with Bach’s music. Bach Reframed also draws on success with Bach’s St. John Passion, for which they commissioned a new English translation, and pays tribute to founder Robert Shaw, who believed that choral classics should speak directly to audiences in English and be communal experiences as they were originally intended.
