Spring 2025 at New York City Ballet brings a trove of choreographic treasures to the stage, beginning with a program collecting some of Balanchine’s most delectable ballets, ranging from the early masterpiece Apollo to two of his most brilliant later dances, Ballo della Regina and Chaconne. The sweeping elegance of Vienna Waltzes sets a sparkling tone for the spring gala, and an assortment of Ravel-scored works, including the dark and mysterious La Valse, celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Company’s eponymous 1975 festival honoring one of the NYCB’s favorite composers. Contemporary dances feature the return of Artist in Residence Alexei Ratmansky’s Solitude, a stunning meditation on grief, and Christopher Wheeldon’s solemnly hopeful pas de deux from After the Rain. Kyle Abraham’s When We Fell, originally presented as a film in 2021, has its live performance premiere, and the spring concludes with a weeklong run of Balanchine’s magical version of the cherished Shakespeare comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
