Theater of War Productions, a company that uses classical texts to examine contemporary issues, presents a reading of scenes from Philoctetes, about a decorated soldier abandoned on a desolate island, followed by a town hall-style discussion. Military veterans and professional actors, including David Strathairn, Chad Coleman and Ato Blankson-Wood, will perform sequences from Sophocles' tragedy, and then director-adapter Bryan Doerries will facilitate a conversation about how the play's themes relate to the trauma soldiers experience. Chisa Hutchinson's acclaimed play Redeemed is running at 59E59 Theaters through Sunday. But if you can't make it in person, you can live-stream the final performance at home. In this harrowing two-hander, Trevor, a young white man in prison for beating an Asian man to death, seeks forgiveness from the victim's sister Claire... or does he just want her support at his parole hearing? The screening will be followed by a post-show discussion.

As part of its commitment to emerging playwrights, the Lucille Lortel Theatre is presenting a series of FREE public readings, including a few online. First up is The Revolutionary's Son, Terence Anthony's drama about Black social activist Lucy E. Parsons, one of the founders of the Industrial Workers of the World, and her problematic relationship with her only child, Albert Richard Parsons Jr. If you don't know the history, it is absolutely fascinating!
