Even though in-person theatre and dance are back in full swing, in the name of accessibility we're continuing to round up performances to watch online from the comfort of home. Our curated list spotlights the five best options to stream this weekend, Friday, February 21 to Sunday, February 23, for free or at low cost.

Theater of War Productions: A Refutation

Live-streaming on Friday, February 21 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, February 22 at 2 p.m. ET for FREE but you must reserve your spot in advance to receive the Zoom link.

Theater of War Productions, a company that uses classical texts to examine contemporary issues, presents A Refutation, readings of excerpts from two conflicting historic accounts of Philadelphia's 1793 yellow fever epidemic to spark a conversation about health inequality in today's society. Chad Coleman (The Walking Dead, The Wire), Tony winner BrĂan F. O'Byrne (Frozen, Conclave), Michael Potts (The Wire, The Piano Lesson) and former Washington Post theatre critic Peter Marks perform the passages followed by a guided discussion facilitated by director Bryan Doerries. These thought-provoking events are taking place in person at two Washington, DC venues, but Zoom links are also available.

Pittsburgh Public Theater: Trouble in Mind

Streaming Friday, February 21 at 8 p.m., Saturday, February 22 at 2 and 8 p.m., Sunday, February 23 at 2 p.m. ET for $39.

The celebrated Pittsburgh Public Theater is currently presenting an in-person production of Trouble in Mind, but a recording of the show will be available online this weekend courtesy of The League of Live Stream Theater. A prescient examination of racism in the theatre industry, Alice Childress' 1955 satire centers on a Black actress starring in an anti-lynching drama on Broadway who challenges the show's all-white creative team. Perhaps even more timely than when it was written and rejected by Broadway!

Live From 54 Below: Sondheim Unplugged

Live-streaming on Sunday, February 23 at 7 p.m. ET for $29.

Enjoy the latest installment of Sondheim Unplugged, a stripped-down concert series celebrating the late songwriting legend. Talented vocalists including On Your Feet!'s Eric Ulloa croon Sondheim tunes accompanied solely by piano alongside special Broadway guests including Ramona Mallory from the 2009 A Little Night Music revival and Lucia Spina from the recent Into the Woods. Live-streaming from 54 Below's swanky stage. If you prefer to attend in person, click here for info.

PBS Great Performances: The Magic of Spirituals

Streaming on PBS's website until Friday, February 28 for FREE.

Jessye Norman and Kathleen Battle's 1990 Carnegie Hall concert is legendary... but what was going on behind the scenes? This documentary features footage from that famed evening along with interviews and reminiscences from those who were there as well as artists who were impacted by the landmark evening, including producer Peter Gelb, soprano Angel Blue, Harlem Gospel Singers' founder Queen Esther Marrow and diva Jocelyn B. Smith.

PBS Great Performances: Merry Wives

Streaming until Friday, February 28 for FREE.

It's bitterly cold outside, which makes it the perfect moment to revisit Merry Wives, Jocelyn Bioh's warm, one-act adaptation of the Bard's The Merry Wives of Windsor, recorded live at The Public Theater's Shakespeare in the Park in summer of 2021. Set in modern-day Harlem with ladies' man Falstaff (Broadway vet Jacob Ming-Trent) attempting to woo two married West African immigrants, the show is an exuberant romp that celebrates broad comedy and Black joy. Saheem Ali directs an all-Black cast in this laugh-out-loud comedy, which I absolutely loved.
