In September, the theatre community was rocked by the unexpected death of Gavin Creel, who was just 48 and had been quietly battling a very rare and aggressive type of cancer. Known for his gorgeous tenor voice and his infectious charm, he was a beloved Broadway performer, winning a Tony Award for his wonderful turn as Cornelius Hackl in Hello, Dolly!, and earning raves for his work in Hair, Into the Woods, She Loves Me (which you can watch on BroadwayHD) and Thoroughly Modern Millie. In addition singing, acting and dancing, he was an accomplished songwriter, writing and starring in the almost-solo show Walk on Through. Inspired by his visits to The Metropolitan Museum of Art and commissioned by the institution, the show premiered at The Met in 2021; a recording of the evening has now been uploaded to YouTube in his honor. I saw Walk on Through last year Off Broadway and adored Creel's heartfelt and humorous tribute to the art of appreciating art.

The result is a fresh and intimate take on Dickens' timeless tale featuring Mays in a tour-de-force performance—make that performances. A perfect way to kick off the holiday season!
