Irondale: The Notebook of Trigorin - begins March 28

The venerable Irondale Ensemble Project, which has been mounting innovative indie theatre for more than 40 years, presents a rare revival of The Notebook of Trigorin, a late-career play by Tennessee Williams, his decidedly Americanized take on Anton Chekhov's classic The Seagull. For this production, longtime ensemble members who appeared in the company's 1997 revival of The Seagull return to this exploration of love, ambition and artistic struggle in new roles alongside younger actors, celebrating the enduring power of performance and echoing the play's themes.

FRIGID New York: New York City Fringe - begins April 2

FRIGID New York presents its annual New York City Fringe featuring more than 60 eclectic shows over three weeks at five venues: Under St. Marks and Wild Project in the East Village, the Chain Theatre's two stages in Midtown West and The Rat NYC in Dumbo. Highlights include The 40-Year-Old Ballerino (April 12 and 20) about a middle-aged man replacing his addictions with dance; A Crucible: A Puritanical Celebration of Witches and Turkeys (April 12, 14 and 19), a comedic riff on Arthur Miller's classic; How to Give Up on Your Dreams (April 11, 13 and 20) about a failed Broadway baby; The Phantom of the Opera's Friend (April 12, 16, 18 and 19) in which the villain's BFF tells all; and the self-explanatory JAWS: the Musical! A super NYC story, Marco Antonio Rodriguez's Domino Effect centers on four friends from different generations connecting and clashing at the domino table on a sweltering summer night in Washington Heights. This world premiere is presented by the Lin-Manuel Miranda-supported People's Theatre Project, LatinX Playwrights Circle and Boundless Theatre Company.

As protests against the current regime rage around the country, playwright Roberto Monticello and director Lissa Moira tell a historical tale of resistance inspired by true stories from World War II. In Café Resistance, it's 1939 and Germany has invaded France but the licentious ladies of The Blue Parrot Café bordello refuse to collaborate. Even when the Nazis take over the Parisian establishment for the enjoyment of their troops, the women who work there find inventive ways to fight back.

Shayok Misha Chowdhury—whose play Public Obscenities won critical raves, multiple Obie Awards and was short-listed for the Pulitzer Prize—is behind Rheology, a bold world premiere written, directed and starring Chowdhury and his real-life physicist mother, Bulbul Chakraborty. An expert in rheology, a science that examines the deformation and flow of matter, Chakraborty and Chowdhury take to the stage for a novel experiment that explores their bond and their differences.

Devised theatre company The Anthropologists debuts a new work exploring the unsung history of Black midwives. After a Black woman dies in childbirth, her journalist sister goes looking for the knowledge that could have saved her. A celebration of ancient wisdom and an exploration of the racism that leads to high rates of maternal mortality in the Black community. Note: axes, herbs and satchels: open the archives will also be performed in Washington Heights and the South Bronx in May.

You've probably heard of Naked Boys Singing. What about naked boys doing tricks? That's the gimmick of The Naked Magicians, a ribald romp from Australia featuring a pair of ripped and rip-roaring illusionists. These guys don't have anything up their sleeves because all they're wearing are top hats! Must be 18 or older to attend.

Director Robert Lyons and playwright-performer Daniel Irizarry used to collaborate frequently at the dearly departed New Ohio Theatre, which closed in 2023. The experimental duo returns to the downtown indie theatre scene with Class Dismissed, an interactive experience (alcohol, snacks, sing-alongs and even a book swap are promised!) set at a grad school where the teachers and the students are going off the rails. Come prepared to participate!

A new pitch-black comedy by Adam Szymkowicz (the Clown Bar series, Marian or the True Tale of Robin Hood), Fat Cat Killers focuses on a pair of cooperate drones who get laid off and abduct the CEO to exact revenge. Fearsomely funny and eerily timely! Szymkowicz's frequent collaborator Andrew Block directs and Trump Lear creator David Carl stars.

Northwestern MFA alum Kallan Dana penned this surreal sounding story about a young woman obsessed with Patti Smith who starts to lose her grip on reality. Described as a coming-of-age story about theatre, friendship and grief, this new play explores the abyss between who we are as adolescents and adults.

Soho Playhouse: Heart Ripped Out Twice and So Can You! - begins April 25

Inspired by intersecting health and romantic crises, Linnea Bond's autobiographical solo show asks whether life is worth living (spoiler alert: it is!). A hit at multiple Fringe festivals, Heart Ripped Out Twice and So Can You! is billed as a comedy about pain that balances outrageous entertainment with insight.
