With the Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle nominations announced this week, there's been a lot of the usual chatter about who was overlooked and who was boosted by the recognition. What you probably haven't read as much about is the one thing
YOU really need to know-- namely, which of these hot, acclaimed shows can you actually get tickets to through TDF?
The answer?
Almost all of them!
All of the Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle-nominated musicals are either available directly to TDF members, at an exclusive members-only discount, or are regularly turning up at the TKTS Discount Booths in Times Square and South Street Seaport (With the exception of Lincoln Center Theater's sumptuous revival of
South Pacific).
You want details? The rollicking '50s spoof
Cry-Baby is welling up both on the membership list and at the booths. Tickets to the vibrant urban musical
In the Heights, which got a record 13 Tony noms, have been kicking it at the discount booths. The innovative rock bio-musical
Passing Strange is a fave both of both TDF members and TKTS patrons. The roller-disco romp
Xanadu is also rolling up repeatedly for members and at TKTS, and so is the ravishing revival of Sondheim’s
Sunday in the Park With George. Speaking of revivals, the ultimate backstage musical,
Gypsy, has been seen at the discount booths, and so has the populist revival of the original '50s romance,
Grease.
If it’s nominated plays you want, you can cut to the head of the line. Not only are TDF members regularly getting dibs on such favorites as the Pulitzer Prize-winning, multi-Tony-nominated
August: Osage County and the Outer Critics Circle-nominated comedy/drama
From Up Here; theatregoers at the discount booths are finding these and many other Tony-nominated offerings--the sex farce
Boeing-Boeing, the intriguing period drama
Les Liaisons Dangereuses--available via the convenient “Play Only” line. That’s not even counting plays with Tony-nominated powerhouse performances which you can find either on the TDF members’ list or at the discount boo0th: the resonant one-man drama
Thurgood, featuring Laurence Fishburne; the political satire
November, with Laurie Metcalf; a riveting new
Macbeth starring Patrick Stewart and Kate Fleetwood; the brilliant new revival of Caryl Churchill’s
Top Girls featuring Martha Plimpton.
And that’s not even counting a number of other plays and musicals that have received Tony and Outer Critics Circle noms for direction, costumes, score, etc. In short, the very best offerings on Broadway and Off, newly showered with awards nominations, are available to TDF members and booth buyers. It’s an honor for the shows to be nominated, of course, but it’s even better for them to be seen.
