On July 8th, 2013, Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation hosted a panel discussion focused on the future of musical theatre and featuring writer Rick Elice, songwriter Jeff Bowen, singer/songwriter Amanda Green, director Stafford Arima, choreographer Kelly Devine and songwriter Benj Pasek. Moderated by Sheri Sanders, this conversation examines how collaborators must explore new styles of work in order to progress the art-form. The panelists discuss currently accepted genres of music and how we have not entirely lost sight of what is considered to be more ‘legit’—as they call it—musical theatre composition. The panel concludes by examining the evolution of the audition process, self-marketing on the internet, and the increased level of competition, especially for those artists who are not “triple threats.” Listen in to learn more about what the new generation of musical theatre thinks of the present and what they believe the future holds.
