TDF subsidizes productions by paying theatres higher ticket prices than the amount paid to us by our members. That difference (as much as $9 per ticket) is the margin of subsidy contributed by TDF to support these new productions of artistic merit.
EDUCATION & TRAINING
TDF builds audiences for tomorrow with programs for today’s teenagers—-from budding playwrights to students who have never even attended a play. TDF programs help educators connect with students’ natural enthusiasm for drama and performance.
Open Doors
Theatre and dance mentors for high school students
TDF Open Doors is a mentoring program offering small groups of high school students an in-depth introduction to live theatre and dance. Each group works with one or more dedicated theatre and dance professionals throughout the school year.
Stage Doors
Workshops that create informed theatergoers
In the TDF Stage Doors program, teaching artists collaborate with classroom teachers to develop a series of eight workshops designed to prepare students for an informed, engaged theatregoing experience, which is the culmination of the program.
Residency Arts Project
NYC students learn playwriting from the pros
The TDF Residency Arts Project is an intensive playwriting program that brings teaching artists into the classroom to guide students in writing original scenes and plays. The students' work is then given a public staged reading by professional actors at the end of the school year.

Commercial Theater Institute
Nurturing new producing talent for the commercial theatre
The Commercial Theater Institute, now in its 28th year, is a project of Theatre Development Fund (TDF) and The Broadway League, Inc. Dedicated to training the next generation of commercial theatre producers, CTI provides resources and guidance to individuals interested in the various paths one can take towards creating commercial productions for the stage. They also administer the Robert Whitehead Award presented to a graduate of CTI for "outstanding achievement in commercial theatre producing."
